THE ARTIST
Rones Dumke

“Time Governs All”, “The Fall of Eve”, “Compassion”, “The ABC of the Metaphysicians”. Just hearing the titles of the works of Rones Dumke, with no other information, it’s clear how he is attracted by the enigmatic questions of the universe. When one finally sees his creations, profound secrets and mysteries are revealed, as if they had asked to be de-codified.
For Dumke, the enigma is “the power to transform a thing into something different”. Using sources including figures painstakingly cut from books on science, and symmetrical collages painted with oil or gouache, his work transmits symbolisms that remit the viewer to arcane theories believed to be hiding in famous paintings, such as The Last Supper of Leonardo da Vinci; or Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling.
His works are influenced by areas and subjects such as metaphysics, philosophy and theosophy: they appear to be attempts to describe some basic fundamental causes or principles – the basic structure. They remit to philosophical doctrines – some, mystical or speculative – which appear to seek in nature knowledge of the divinity, origin, purpose of the world.
From his interest in the hermetic tradition and alchemy, Dumke seems to have inherited a quest for harmony of opposites. “I see art as a metaphorical poem and an intellectual act that establishes the correspondences between the existing realities,” he says. In his view, imagination is the beginning of synthesis, able to unite everything that is irreconcilable: “All the paradoxes can be reconciled. I seek to reconcile the extremes, but in such a way that they don’t lose their peculiarities.”
He is a defender of spiritual values; he sees in the plastic arts a release of emotional tension, able to afford the sentiment of lightness, and relief. In his view, the work of the true artist is not so much a catharsis, a purification of his own personal problem, but a satisfaction of the more intimate anxieties of the human soul. As he puts it: “The artist should achieve a symbolic resolution of his personal problems, with the panacea that is art, and not in the form of neurotic symptoms, as is the case for an artist who is not “inspired by the gods"”.
While still a teenager, Dumke suffered beneficial influence from his father, a watchmaker and pupil of Guido Viaro. “He and my grandfather Aurélio used to draw very well. I have always seen the drawing of figurative image on white paper as a magical act”. As well as inspiration from his family, he had support from the art critic and historian Adalice Araújo.
He frequented the atelier of the painter Carlos Scliar and won various important awards in drawing salons and galleries. Describing himself as conservative and traditionalist, Dumke says he has overcome all the obstacles in his artistic career of more than 50 years thanks to the support of his wife and “Divine gift” Mara Lúcia, and his daughter Tamara, the principal reason for him to continue with his long, creative journey.
