I WANT TO GO STRAIGHT TO ARTIST'S WORK OF ART

THE ARTIST

Bemgi

Painting elements like water, earth, air and fire provide transformative experiences that lead us, through a thread of freedom, to our most intimate thoughts.

It was a deep dive into David Hockney’s Californian pools that awakened in our artist Bernardo Ernesto Mora Gonzalez – known as Bemgi – the desire to seek channels of expression in his painting. Inspired by the geometry and architecture of Hockney’s Los Angeles dwellings, one of the greatest British artists of the last 50 years, he frankly says he uses the components of the universe to give shape to his creations.

“Painting elements like water, earth, air and fire provides transformative experiences that lead us, through a thread of freedom, to our most intimate thoughts.”

On freedom, he seems to agree with another Anglo-Irish painter whose language and theatrical approach to art fascinates him: Francis Bacon. Bacon conveyed to him the idea that the human being releases what is within him by winning, and using, his own freedom. “The distorted and almost unlimited representation of the human figure impressed me and became the focus of my attention: this magnificent ambivalence was one of the factors that made me study Bacon’s work in the smallest detail.”

Optical and kinetic art have always been present in his identity. His abstract work aims to break the existing conservative mold and create new viewpoints through textures, optical states and movements.

He has a degree in Architecture from the École d'Architecture Paris Val-de-Marne. Optical and kinetic art have always been present in his identity. His abstract work aims to break the existing conservative mold and create new viewpoints through textures, optical states and movement. He calls the result of this search ‘abstract-chromatic-lyrical’ – work in which he explores abstraction by permanent essays in visual movements of color, geometric patterns, chromatic progressions, rhythmic musicality and contrasts: “I feel my creations are part of a cosmic dimension where vocabulary and the visual grammar are infinite. The representation of reality derives exactly from my kinetic understanding of space and form.”

The resource he uses is acrylic on canvas. Born in 1970 in Colombia, he lived for years in Europe until moving to Brazil in 2006, where he now lives in Curitiba, in the state of Paraná. His work as an artist was dormant in his first years living in the Old World, and resurfaced strongly in his first months in Brazil – leading to an intense creative routine, since then, which has resulted in an extensive collection of work conceived on Brazilian soil – but in which sojourns in the last decade in big cities such as Caracas, New York, Paris and Barcelona have provided key inputs in maturing his concepts in visual art.
